Stage 1 Paddling


Activities to be done during your Joey unit nights to prepare for your visit.

  • Discuss as a Unit what a PFD is and why we use them at Brownsea.
  • As a Unit discuss what the children should wear during their trip to Brownsea.
  • Discuss the buddy system, what it is and how it keeps us safe.


Activities ran at Brownsea by our qualified leaders during your visit.

  • A group canoe trip down the cabbage tree creek with possibilities for stops.
  • Floating for 2 minutes and swimming 10 metres with a PFD.
  • Learn and demonstrate a forward and backward stroke.
  • Learn about and demonstrate taking care of equipment during our trip.
  • Learn about the parts of a canoe and discuss the risks of cold water.


Activity ran at Brownsea and badge presented on the day.

  • After our paddling trip we will talk to the scouts about what they enjoyed.

What to Bring

  • Sunsmart Clothes ready for paddling
  • Spray Jacket
  • Uniform not required
  • Lunch, Snacks
  • Water Bottle


Parking is limited at Brownsea. Take care when dropping off youth members

  1. Participants Must be able to Swim (as per QBSI)
  2. If you hold a Stage 5 or L2 or greater in Paddling, there is no cost
  3. The link will close at Thursday 5pm on the night before. Orders must be in before then to avoid disappointment.
  4. Payment, and C4 approval must be made through this link
  5. Once the fee is paid and provisions purchased, no refund will be made through non-attendance at the respective activity except in special circumstances.
  6. You will need your membership number to help us with COVID tracing
